Ricky Gervais rocked my world (well, briefly) at the Kodak Theatre, this weekend!
Here's the deal:
When you marry a journalist, you may not get to drive a fancy car, but if you're lucky you may occasionally get tickets to fun things. This has been a good year for this.
For instance, this weekend we both got to see Ricky Gervais in his Out Of England Tour. Better yet, it was at the Kodak theater, so I got to experience not just one hilarious show, but also see it at the famous Kodak Theatre where they also have the Oscars! Very exciting stuff, for me.
For the record it was a terrific show. Ricky Gervais did not disappoint.
He was engaging and funny throughout the show. The time just flew by and we both loved every minute.
I was especially impressed how so often he remained the "straight man" (and I don't mean "not gay") during what was essentially one long monologue. That's not easy. But, he pulled it off with ease.
For instance, he has a very funny bit about "going commando." The whole thing is mostly his reaction to someone else not there. But, that's what I mean. You're watching him react to some other funny character you don't even get to meet. Brilliant.
Perhaps it's Ricky's Gervais's utter incredulity to situations that sets him apart from other comics.
And so, while my husband wrote "real review" (Peter Larsen, Pop Culture reporter for The Orange County Register. Shameless Plug. But, hey, it's my meal ticket, too. And it's a very well written review, mostly because, he's a "real writer.") I, too, want to give you my spin on the evening as well. In my own words, right here in my own own, slightly remedial blog.
Final thoughts: If you are lucky enough to still get a ticket to one of his upcoming shows in NYC, you'll see yourself how flawlessly Ricky Gervais weaves different characters and stories together into one terrific, night of comedy. Ricky Gervais, Out Of England Tour is not only great "stand up," it's true comic theater. After all, Ricky Gervais is an actor, not just a comedian. He's funny and good.
I mean, he was "standing ovation" good. Really.
And it helped that we had great seats, too. (down in the orchestra near stage left.)
What can I say? It's what I'd call "a perfect date night" even if we still had to drive home in our beloved old minivan, and not a brand new Prius. It's all good.
However, Mental Note: If we ever get to see Ricky Gervais live, again, I really, really, really want one of those damned wristbands so that we can go to the after-party, too. I just know it had to be amazing.
*Ah, well. I can dream, can't I?

Other celeb sightings: Kathy Griffin was there, looking very fabulous in her chic white jeans and flaming red hair. She was escorted by her amiable, and hunky assistant, Tom. I wanted to give her tasteful "shoutout," but my husband wouldn't let me.
Also at the Out Of England Tour was Jason Bateman and I believe I even spotted Dominick Dunne. However it gave me a start and confused me since I mostly associate Mr. Dunne with notorious murder trials. Perhaps it was another gray haired gentleman with similar horn-rimmed spectacles. It kind of threw me, actually.
I also, may have spotted Elvis Costello, there as well. But, can't be sure of that either. If it was him, he had slightly less trademark-y glasses. But, I might have been tripping on this as I drove up to LA listening to Rhino Records Greatest Hits of Elvis Costello. Maybe I just want to think I saw him.
The evening's uncool celeb sightings: Rick Dees. Who doesn't look fun, let alone funny, at all.
Below is someone else's YouTube clip of Ricky Gervais doing a bit which also happens to be in his current show. It's funny. But, take it from me, he's even funnier in person.
