George Francis Lewis, an English teacher at Brattleboro Union High School for 24 years and well-known figure in local civic, educational, and Episcopal Church circles, died Sunday, Dec. 18 after a period of declining health. He was 90.  In addition to his career at BUHS, Lewis was a resident of Guilford since 1968 when he, his wife Laura and daughter Louise settled there. He was a dedicated member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Brattleboro for nearly 50 years, and a lifelong lover of the opera. Many no doubt saw Lewis over the years as he drove around Windham County in one of a series of Volvo sedans he owned, always easy to spot thanks to a unique Vermont license plate that read OPERA. Lewis was born on Nov. 19, 1926 in Richmond, Staten Island in New York, the son of Robert Miller Lewis and Louise Betty Charlotte (Arbogast) Lewis. He graduated from New Dorp High School in 1944 and then joined the Army where he served in the final months of World War II, eventually working as

A world without core human values, such as kindness, empathy, a connection to one's community, caring for others, is a world doomed to crumble and fail. Trump's world, I fear, would look much like Frank Capra's "Pottersville," from It's A Wonderful Life. A place where ruthless progress (for oneself) is valued over all else. We are a strong, but also fair and compassionate country. (At least we wisely strive to be.) But, Trump does not see any longterm value in those core human values. And that is his ultimate failing. Putting others needs and first is not partisan. It's not Socialism. It is human. And we need to stay human to survive. We need a presidency where core human values are built right into the very platform for our own happiness and survival. It is our country's capacity for caring for others how we both flex and strengthen our greatest muscles. And the entire planet sees this for what it is: Beautiful and revolutionary

I support Bernie Sanders for president because I believe the Sanders plans for a better future are most in line with what personally matters to me as a middle class mom of two teens, one of which has a severe peanut allergy , who is also now in college. I firmly believe his solutions are not only most in line with what matters to me but actually make the most sense.  Here's why: I know he will  fight the pharmaceutical corruption driving up the high medical costs of caring for a kid with a severe peanut allergy: Including outrageous costs of life-saving epi pens.  I know he will fight global warming alongside really protecting our public health! Her fiddle style is shaped by those traditions but also the challenge she has, playing an instrument that is almost as large as she is. Gaelynn was born with brittle bone disease, a congenital disability that makes playing the violin tucked tightly under the chin not a comfortable option. Instead she plays it upright, as a cellist might.
