I am a pop-culture reject

Things that render me a pop-culture reject:

1.) I have never seen Scarface or Xanandu.

2.) Who is Zac Effron? I mean, Efron.

3.) Although my kids talk about them non-stop, apparently I never "got" that the Jonas Brothers were in Camp Rock.

4.) I have never seen Camp Rock. But, my eleven year old thinks it would be creepy if I had.

5.) "You're not supposed to watch Disney Channel, you're a grown-up."

duh.

I have seen Xanadu, but not Scarface & I'm just as lost on the other things as you are. I don't get the Naked Brothers Band either.

Thank you, I thought I was the only one, too.

And if I ever have to hear "It's The Best Of Both Worlds." I think I'll tear off all my clothes and run screaming into the middle of the street -- just to humilate my kids into watching shows that do NOT have incessant canned laughter.

While stuck in bed earlier this month recovering from the flu, my husband surprised me by coming in and handing me a copy of The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. "This is a perfect time to read this" he said. Now, don't ask me why anyone would hand someone they love a story about the end of the world. Especially someone coughing up a lung from H1N1, but, what can I say? That's just one of the bizarre little quirks which passes for true love around here. Quite reluctantly I began reading this, quite sure that given the bleak nature of the story combined with our entire family getting Swine Flu, was simply going to ensure this book ended up in the literary graveyard that is my side of my bed until a sunnier day. Movie Review Update: "Black Swan" is a mother's worst nightmare.

(Note: At the time of publishing this my oldest kid was barely 13.) Are you a parent? Do you love your daughter?  Then do not ever take her to see this movie.  Ever. For the record, it may be the holidays.  True, they release ballet films during the holidays, but "Black Swan" is no "dance movie." Frankly, it's not even a very good thriller. It's a movie about Natalie Portman  pretending to dance while looking worried and scared and flapping her arms around while she picks at her skin and toenails until they bleed. And then she picks at her skin so much that you want to run screaming from the theater because it's so creepy and gross that you can barely sit there and take it any longer. Lots of close ups of snipping at skin with nail clippers and scissors.  Lots of long shots of Portman pulling off her hangnails until the skin is stripped up and off the fingers while she winces and bleeds into the sink. -- Merry Christmas!  Here's your da...
