Step away from The Blanche, please.

I'm a fan of Gillian Anderson, however watching this short film The Departure, staring and directed by Gillian Anderson, written by Andrew O'Hagan just makes me want to scream.

Oh. I get it. I get that there are some roles we actresses covet and love so very much that we'll always be possessive about them. Blanche is my "Git your hand's offa my Blanche, woman!" role. I own it -- Blanche has been a role I've wanted to play almost as long as I can remember wanting to act.  Most of my early goals have fallen to the wayside eons ago when life's more immediate needs took centerstage for me.  But, Streetcar.  And Blanche?   She's the one part -- I've never given up on.  Her essence and spirit.  I have never given up on wanting to illuminate her with my own dna.

Okay, so back to this video.

As for The Departure, as I understand this is a scene/story/character study of Blanche in events prior to Streetcar Named Desire.   I realize the goal was not to re-create a TW version of Streetcar or Blanche we've seen before.

However, I admit there a few things in the world I'm possessive about:  My daughters, and Blanche.  And if you dare choose to inhabit Ms. DuBois, please do so only with the utmost respect and buckets of talent.

Courtesy of The Guardian: Gillian Anderson resumes her role as Blanche DuBois in a prequel to Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire, inspired by the Young Vic theatre's acclaimed production in 2014. The film takes place in the days before Blanche arrives at her sister Stella's home. The Departure is directed by Gillian Anderson and written by Andrew O'Hagan.
